Matting an image creates a window around the framed item. It can give a sense of space, as well as lead your eye towards the artwork. There is a large range of colours to choose from, but your piece and personal preferences will help determine the colour; neutral colours can feel subtle and bring focus to the piece or make it “pop”, using complimentary colours found within the piece to keep the theme following throughout or simply be bright and bold! On flat images, a matboard will also provide space between the framed item & glass (which is subject to temperature change).
Double Mats and Spaced Mats
Matboards can be layered to create a sense of depth, as well as for visual appeal. A double mat is the most commonly used; whether it is double of the same colour for a subtle “lead in” to the piece, or the bottom mat of a different colour for contrast. The bottom mat can be a great way of adding a small splash of a stronger colour without taking the focus off the artwork. A triple mat can also look great on the right piece! A spaced mat can be used for both aesthetic & “construction” purposes. Aesthetically, spacing mats can be a beautiful way to transport you into a piece and create depth. Sometimes spacing is required on a small 3D object or a raised medium that requires distance from the glass.
V-Grooves are two bevelled cuts across the mat that meet in the middle, exposing the core colour of the top mat (white or black). V-Grooves can be a smart option to bring multiple images or windows together in the one frame or simple adding an extra design element to your custom piece.
Float mounting is a beautiful way to display your artwork. As the name suggests, a float mount means your artwork is raised off the backing to give it the appearance that it is floating. Float mounting is a great choice for original art, when you have a piece with textured or uneven edges that you want to show off, or if you want to display an artist signature or image that runs close to the edge.
We love the challenge of object framing because each piece is unique! The design process is creative and exciting, whether it is precious family heirloom, war medals or sports memorabilia: each item is 100% customisable.
Using special tools and techniques, we stretch the canvas tight and evenly with perfectly folded and affixed corners. Custom made stretcher bars are joined to suit any canvas size and depth. Stretching a canvas takes time and patience. An improperly stretched canvas will appear misshapen and may have waves that will become more pronounced and unsightly with time. By using the correct technique, a stretched canvas can be a fantastic feature for your space.
Floater frames are a great way to produce a professional gallery finish for your canvas. The canvas is recessed within the floater frame and evenly spaced between the edges; they give a floating effect to the canvas.
We also provide a matboard or mount board cutting service, should that be all you require.
